Unfortunately, "head out window" is not the safest position for dogs to be in, nor is every dog a happy traveler. A dog car seat is probably the safest and most secure choice for small and medium-sized dogs. The seat is secured by the car's seat belt, and the dog is then secured within the seat by a safety strap. Protecting your car's interior is important, too. Reduce scratches and make hair cleanup a snap with dog seat covers. A foam or padded dog seat cover is also much more comfortable on long trips, especially for older dogs.
If you own an SUV, hatchback, station wagon, or a vehicle with a similar type of trunk, allowing your dog to stay in that area would give him or her a little extra room in which to roam around. Dog barriers prevent seat jumping, and create the sort of enclosed environment that helps dogs feel secure.
