Dog Bed Sizing

Right size, right style

Dog beds come in every size to fit every dog. From extra large dog beds to extra small, there is a bed perfect for your dog. Most dog beds have manufacturer's size guides by breed, height, and weight, or both. If your dog falls on or near the upper measurements, consider buying the next larger size.

Measuring your pet is the most accurate way to choose the correct size. Take your pet's measurements while he or she is lying down and add a few inches for wiggle room. Compare your pet's measurements with the bed measurement, remembering that round or oval beds are measured at the widest point.

The following table is a general rule of thumb.

Breed | Weight | Bed size

  • Chihuahua, Pomeranian | 10 pounds or less | Extra small 20 inches by 12 inches
  • Sheltie, Terrier | 11 to 25 pounds | Small 24 inches by 18 inches
  • Beagle, Cocker Spaniel | 26 to 40 pounds | Medium 30 inches by 20 inches
  • Husky, Samoyed | 41 to 70 pounds | Large 36 inches by 24 inches
  • Boxer, German Shepherd | 71 to 90 pounds | Extra large 42 inches 26 inches

Sleep style

Dogs, like people, have different sleeping styles. Some sleep curled up, while others like to sprawl out. Your dog's sleep position will be a factor in deciding which dog bed to buy.

Dogs that like to sleep in a curled position will appreciate beds with sides, giving them a place a curl up and feel secure. Sprawling sleepers will be more comfortable on beds without sides so they can stretch without restriction. Sprawling sleepers may be more comfortable on the next size larger.

No matter what size or what kind of sleeper, there is a perfect bed for your dog.
