How to make Fido a model citizen

You've got a new member of the household - a dog. How do you make sure you get the behavior you want and none you don't from your furry family member? Here are some basic dog training tips to get you started.

Be the big dog

From Saint Bernards to toy poodles, dogs are pack animals. Pack animals expect their pack to have a leader a dominant personality who tells the pack what to do. If you don't act like that leader or "alpha," your pet may try to run for that office. As soon as you get your dog, she must learn that you are alpha in every way. You get the first choice of places to sit, you are first into the house, you get to eat first, and most importantly, you always decide what goes and what doesn't. Establish your dominance from the first moments you know each other.

Never reward bad behavior

You don't want Spot to sit on the couch. But every night after dinner, you see him right there on the couch next to your spouse, who is absent-mindedly scratching Spot's ears. Spot's no dummy he's being rewarded for his behavior. Your dog will risk many corrections to get one reward. You must avoid even accidentally rewarding unwanted behavior.

Find out what motivates your dog and use it

Positive reinforcement motivates every dog. But the most effective motivator may vary from one dog to the next. Whether your friend loves affection, playtime, or a snack, reward good behavior with even more excitement and energy than you would use to correct his mistakes. Your dog wants to make you happy. Don't just mumble your praise; celebrate your buddy's success!
